Changing Our Name

Though I remain unconvinced a name change is actually necessary. Though I believe such a change at this time was unwise. Though I believe it occurred unilaterally and unConstitutionally, I will herein give my analysis of the proposed party names suggested thus far.

By far the best one suggested so far has been 'American Socialist Party' or ASP. The obvious reference to the American Revolution is fine the 'Don't Tread on Me' flag and motto is the Tea Party symbol and they will compare the SFP to them. The SFP has always shied away from the red, white and blue stars and bars icons as too nationalist and exclusionist in nature and if this name is selected I would rather staunchly continue to support not using those symbols. While I agree that the SFP needs to refocus our political goals and freshen our iconography it needs to be done in a more democratic fashion. However, if a name change vote is to be held then I would support a change to the 'American Socialist Party'.

The Browncoats were my suggestion and is -IMHO- the second best suggestion. However, I am going to have to go there and say that name is an open invitation to compare us to the Brown Shirts of Fascism. We can not become what we detest in others, we must maintain our democratic beliefs right down to changing our name, even if like me we are against it.

American Labor Party is simply a Plain Jane name and I would come closer to supporting United Socialist Workers Party than ALP - we are not a mountain that needs climbing.

The Rebel Alliance, just no. Much too similar to the American Rebel Alliance of Ronald 'Gimper' Reagan fame.

Rogue Squadron is a no also. Nice Star Wars reference but that name was used once before and it would be rude to intrude on that history and we would be called out for doing so.

Citizen Soldiers just almost works since, in reality, we are all Citizen Soldiers of America and it is a nice nod to a noted American Historian. However, this is a name that would be a more appropriate for a Military Unit.

Those are the ones suggested so far, mine is in there though after consideration I have backed off of it and will as I said be supporting 'American Socialist Party', although the sound of 'United Socialist Workers Party' sort of rolls off the tongue. Although I believe we should not abandon the Socialist Freedom Party name and history, a name which has taken us from one of the oldest sub-top-5 parties to one of the oldest and third most populous party in America. So my heart is with retaining the Socialist Freedom Party name, but if the party must change its name then 'American Socialist Party' is the one.

Staying SFP

Socialist Freedom Party is a venerable name, of an age with the largest parties in the eUnited States. Since 2009 the SFP has been the SFP, seven years in total. In this frame of time, the SFP has practiced the core values of our party: unity, inclusiveness, individuality, and free expression.

This is what the name stands for. We have always been an open party, one that includes all and is governed democratically by anyone who wants to participate. I can share my own story in support of this.

In 2014 I joined the SFP after a brief tenure in the suffocating bureaucracy of an MU I won't name here. Likewise, the party I had been a part of showed little interest in me and had a dead IRC and the forum was hosted on the eUSAforums, which I didn't really like. Being of a leftward persuasion, in reality, I joined the SFP, which I figured meant not getting into politics majorly given their small size. Oh well.

SFP turned out to be a fantastic choice. Per our inclusive culture, I got an invitation to join the Revolutionary Committee within a week. As I wrote and grew I became a part of a brotherhood, from Jude Conners to Phoenix Quinn we organized as the situation required and worked together to achieve our goals.

It is a story of my own that I believe the name SFP represents. The story of welcoming new friends into the fold, the ideal of having every voice carry equal weight if it wants to be heard. This is what the Socialist Freedom Party name stands for, and it is for the principles of freedom, equality, and inclusiveness that I believe we should continue this noble tradition.

Please consider maintaining Socialist Freedom Party as the name of our venerable party.

So there you have them. The suggested names so far are as follows.

Socialist Freedom Party
American Socialist Party
Browncoats
American Labor Party
The Rebel Alliance
Rogue Squadron
Citizen Soldiers
United Socialist Workers Party (for the giggles)

You know my view on this matter. I too wish to see some changes made to the party but those changes must remain true to the roots of the SFP and the many leaders who have gone before us. I will leave you with one more suggestion, we could simply become the 'Socialist Federalized Party' or no?
